Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a form of medicine that dates back over 5000 years. The fully developed system that we see in use today was complete about 2500 years ago.
TCM looks at the body as a whole unit, with every system playing an integrated role in the human body. Whenever one of those systems becomes unbalanced whether due to over-use, poor diet, stress, emotions ect. The whole body becomes unbalanced and we see symptoms of this unbalance.
TCM holds the view that along with the physical substances within the body there is also an energetic aspect that provides the motive force behind all of the activities within us. This is vital energy is called Qi (chee) and through manipulations of the body we can help direct, unblock and boost up the functional aspects of the body, thus restoring health. There are many different methods to helping get the body back in balance. Acupuncture which is the insertion of fine filiform (solid) needles into the body at precise spots called acupoints is used to manipulate the Qi in precise manners. There is also the use of glass suction cups to move blood and Qi, much like a massage but with the pressure pulling up instead of pressing down. Physical manipulation such as massage and stretching are also used. There is also the use of Chinese herbs to balance the body on a nutritional level.
TCM is a primary form of health care and can treat any disease. But like every other form of healthcare it cannot cure all of them. TCM is very good at treating a number of conditions such as chronic and acute pain, digestive and bowel disorders, skin conditions, fertility and menstrual issues, emotional disorders, sleep and low energy issues to name a few.
